History

The Western Australian Oaks was first run in 1953 as a Principal race over 12 furlongs and saw Copper Beech take the inaugural win. The race stayed in the same structure until 1972 when it converted to 2,400 metres as Australia adopted the metric system. In 1979 it saw a rise into the Group 1 race stature, but in 1992 dropped to Group 2 before a further drop in 2006 to Group 3 status.
